The Blues finished their pre-Christmas schedule with a win over visiting Nottingham 1st team on Wednesday, with a 77-67 victory. Missing several key players, the Blues started well with high intensity defence and good decision making on the offensive end. But the strong inside play for the Nottingham forwards kept it close, with Cambridge holding onto a narrow three point lead at half time.
The Lions demonstrated their rapid improvement over the past few weeks with an epic victory over league leaders Luton, 70-67. With Luton arriving late to the game the Lions sought to capitalise on the situation with an explosive, high intensity start.
The Lions finally got their season under way with a long overdue win against Lincoln 2nds 59-55. The Lions maintained a healthy lead throughout the match despite playing well within themselves. A flurry of three pointers put some gloss on the scoreboard for Lincoln in the last few minutes as the Lions' concentration dipped. However there was very positive play from Takumo Goto who made an excellent series of drives in the final quarter to put the game beyond doubt. Man of the match goes to Yc Ng for again leading the scoring with a 21 point contribution. The team wishes a speedy recovery to Elias who had to leave early in the match with a dislocated finger. Overall a very pleasing result but an indifferent performance with far too many turnovers made means there is still much work to do. Thanks to Richard Martin for coaching the team and maintaining his 1.000 coaching record!
Cambridge continued its winning form against De Montfort at home this Sunday, with an 11 point victory, 75-64. From the opening tip the Blues attacked with a balanced offence, but had no answer for the sharp shooting opposition who scored three consecutive three pointers. Strong defence from the Blues lead to several offensive fouls from the opposition but initially two much ball movement from Cambridge resulted in rushed shots and misses that the other team capitalised on giving them a seven point lead at half time. With encouragement from the coach, the Blues came out in the second half hungry to prove their worth. Strong defence lead to some open looks and several threes for the home team. A strong defensive effort shut down De Montfort in the second half, limiting their penetration and forcing bad shots. Aggressive guard play and penetration alongside strong offensive rebounding allowed the Blues to open up a lead. The Blues conditioning showed in the fourth quarter as De Montfort were unable to keep pace as Cambridge held onto the ball to close out the game.
